Aww, how sweet. A male pretendbian wrote an article about another male pretendbian donating money to send another male pretendbian to an Autostraddle queer women’s camp. The boys really look out for each other, ya know?
“For me, and many other trans women, A-Camp is one of the few spaces where we can feel safe and welcome and affirmed as the queer women that we are. It’s a really great place where you can take a break from the often tedious and exhausting, and sometimes frightening and depressing world that likes to beat us up. It’s a place that refreshes you and reminds you that there are good things, places and people in the world, and that there are people willing to fight for your right to be happy and safe in women’s spaces. If this kind of break up in the California mountains with a few hundred other queer women and folks sounds like something you could use, than I’ve got some super great news for you!”
Awesome. These guys are super excited about being made happy and safe in women’s spaces! Meanwhile, the camp where females can be made happy and safe in a female environment, Michfest, is now over. Too bad for females.
I was curious about who is invited to this camp, since it says for ‘queer women’ and both of those words can mean anything. Queer can mean ‘a person wearing a cool outfit,’ so who knows what they mean by queer, and ‘woman’ can mean ‘a male human with sparkly magical feelings inside,’ so who knows how they define that either.
Luckily, there is an FAQ that answers this! It turns out the only people excluded are “cis males” and “straight women.” Trans women can come, non-binaries can come, and so can trans men. This is, of course, a contradiction. If trans women are women, then how come trans men aren’t kicked out for being men? It’s almost like they’re acknowledging that trans men are lesbians even while refusing to acknowledge that trans women are cross-dressing men. In the article, it says that “non-binary trans women” are eligible as well. This is another contradiction. The binary identities are man and woman, and if you are non-binary that means you are neither man nor woman. You can’t be non-binary and a woman at the same time. So what is a non-binary trans woman, then? My best guess is that’s it’s a feminine-presenting male who doesn’t identify as either male or female, but that’s just a guess. These identities can really mean anything—usually I think they just mean “my gender is more sparkly than yours.”
So they are including everyone in this camp, as long as they don’t identify as “cis” men or straight women. But there’s a really easy way to get around that. If non-binaries are included, then any straight man or straight woman can just claim non-binary status and then they’ll have to be included, won’t they? I mean, anyone can claim to be non-binary even if they’re heterosexual and gender-conforming. On what basis would Autostraddle turn them away?
I’m gonna conclude that this camp is for absolutely everyone and the only people who are excluded are people who are lacking a sufficiently sparkly gender identity.
This camp is supposedly for “queer” women, which should be lesbian and bisexual women. I am a lesbian and I would have no interest whatsoever in going to this mess of an identity cesspool.
